RescueGrid™ implementation guide for Shopify 404 product pages
Implement RescueGrid™ by identifying the missing product context where possible, using it to retrieve available visual alternatives, and presenting those products as the primary recovery path while retaining useful navigation for cases where no reliable product context exists.
Identify the product intent
RescueGrid™ is most useful when the missing URL can be connected to a product that previously existed. That product becomes the anchor for alternative discovery.
Retrieve available alternatives
VisualDNA™ and RecoMelon's catalogue intelligence can identify products that preserve relevant characteristics of the missing item while respecting current availability.
Design the recovery page around the next decision
The page should explain that the intended product is unavailable and immediately offer relevant alternatives. Generic navigation can remain available as a fallback, but should not be the only path forward.
Handle unknown 404s separately
Not every 404 has product context. Where the original URL cannot be associated with a product, use a more general recovery experience rather than pretending a recommendation is specific.
Validate catalogue freshness
Recommendations should reflect current availability so RescueGrid™ does not replace one dead end with another.
Measure recovered discovery
Track clicks into recommended products, continued product exploration, conversion and revenue from previously dead-end traffic.
