What is a visual recommendation engine
A visual recommendation engine suggests products based on how they look - colour, shape, pattern, texture, finish - by analysing product images, rather than on what other shoppers bought.
What does it do in an online store?
It powers modules like "Shop Similar" on a product page: a shopper viewing a sage floral midi dress sees other floral midis in close tones, not whatever happened to be in the same basket.
How does it work?
- Read the images. A computer-vision model turns each product photo into a set of visual attributes, such as colour family, silhouette, neckline, print or metal finish.
- Map similarity. Products with close attributes sit near each other, so the engine can find the nearest look-alikes for any item.
- Rank for the shopper. Stock, price, margin rules and in-session behaviour can then reorder the matches.
- Let the shopper refine. Better engines let shoppers rule out an attribute ("no sleeves", "gold not silver") without leaving the page.
How is it different from other recommendation types?
- Visual similarity: picks products by how they look. Best moment: the product page, while the shopper is still choosing. Weak spot: spec-driven goods where looks matter little.
- Collaborative filtering: picks by what similar shoppers viewed or bought. Best moment: homepage, "recommended for you". Weak spot: new products with no history; can mix unrelated categories.
- Frequently Bought Together: picks items often in the same order. Best moment: after the choice, building the basket. Weak spot: doesn't help find the right first product.
- Complete the Look: picks items that style together. Best moment: after the choice, adding pieces. Weak spot: needs curation or complementary logic.
- Rules and tags: picks by merchant-set tags and collections. Best moment: simple, stable catalogues. Weak spot: breaks as the catalogue grows.
These work together. Visual similarity helps the shopper settle on the product; basket tools add to the order afterwards.
When does a visual engine pay off?
- Shoppers buy on look: fashion, jewellery, home decor, furniture, footwear, art prints.
- Large catalogues: the more products, the harder it is to hand-curate alternatives. DecoratorsBest runs visual matching across 230,000 SKUs.
- Frequent new arrivals: matching starts from the image, so new products are recommended on day one (the "cold start" problem).
- High product-page bounce: shoppers who like a product but reject one detail need a nearby alternative, fast.
When doesn't it?
If buyers choose on specifications - voltage, size, compatibility - visual similarity adds little. Attribute filters and search will do more.
Glossary
- Shop Similar: a product-page module showing visually similar alternatives.
- Cold start: recommending a product before it has any views or sales.
- Dealbreaker filter: a filter inside the recommendation panel that removes products with an attribute the shopper won't accept.
- Rec-influenced order: an order in which the shopper engaged with at least one recommendation.
- Visual search: searching by uploading a photo. Related to, but different from, visual recommendations.
Is a visual recommendation engine the same as visual search?
No. Visual search starts from a photo the shopper provides. A visual recommendation engine starts from the product they are already viewing.
Does it need product tagging?
No. It reads images. Tags can still be used as filters.
